Google’s Find My Device: Game-Changing Upgrade for Tracking Devices

Google is rolling out a major update to its Find My Device app, and it’s set to change the way we keep track of our belongings. The update introduces support for third-party trackers, and we’ve got a sneak peek at how these trackers will work with Android devices.

One of the first third-party trackers hitting the market is from Pebblebee, a company known for its Bluetooth-enabled devices. Pebblebee CEO Daniel Daoura recently shared a video on Instagram demonstrating how easy it is to set up their tracker with the Find My Device app.

The setup process is incredibly straightforward: simply hold up the Pebblebee Card next to your Android phone, double-tap the card to start pairing, and the Find My Device app instantly recognizes it. A quick tap on the confirmation screen and you’re all set!

Once set up, you can view the tracker’s location on a map within the Find My Device app, alongside your other connected devices. Setting up other trackers, like those from Anker, should be just as simple.

This update marks a significant expansion of Google’s Find My Device, which was previously limited to tracking Android phones and wearables. Now, it supports a wide range of devices, from trackers like Pebblebee to headphones from Sony and JBL.

Another exciting feature is the ability to track devices even when they’re powered off, a capability demonstrated on the Google Pixel 8. This requires special hardware to keep a Bluetooth signal broadcasting even when the device is inactive.

The Pebblebee demo showcases some handy features of Find My Device, including the ability to make trackers play a sound for easier locating, as well as visual cues to indicate if you’re getting closer to or farther away from your lost item.
