Indo-France Joint Exercise ‘Shakti’ Focuses on Fitness

In a show of strong collaboration, the upcoming 7th edition of the Indo-France joint military exercise “Shakti” is set to kick off on May 13 at the Umroi-based training node in Meghalaya. This fortnight-long exercise will bring together 90 personnel from India’s Rajput Regiment and an equal number from France’s 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).

This biennial training initiative, alternating between India and France, highlights the commitment of both nations to enhance mutual cooperation and strengthen military capabilities. The previous session, hosted in France in November 2021, laid a solid foundation for fostering interoperability and camaraderie between the armed forces of both countries.

Exercise Shakti, conducted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate, is strategically designed to elevate the capabilities of participating troops in conducting multi-domain operations, especially in sub-conventional scenarios. The involvement of observers from the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force further underscores the comprehensive approach of this exercise, ensuring a well-rounded focus on enhancing operational effectiveness.

Key Objectives

Exercise Shakti places a significant emphasis on improving physical fitness levels and refining tactical skills for operations at the grassroots level. Troops from both sides will engage in rigorous training exercises across semi-urban and mountainous terrains, simulating real-world scenarios to enhance their skills in diverse environments. This focus on physical fitness and tactical proficiency reflects the commitment of both nations to maintaining high readiness and preparedness levels.

Moreover, the joint exercise serves as a crucial platform for fostering interoperability and strengthening bilateral relations between India and France. By facilitating mutual learning and the exchange of best practices, Exercise Shakti aims to deepen the bond of friendship and cooperation among armed forces personnel from both nations. Collaborative efforts and shared experiences during the exercise will build trust and mutual understanding, laying a strong foundation for future defence cooperation initiatives.

Strategic Significance

In addition to enhancing operational capabilities, Exercise Shakti underscores the strategic importance of Indo-France military cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges. By synergizing their strengths and expertise, both nations are better prepared to tackle emerging threats and contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

Exercise Shakti stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between India and France, showcasing their commitment to mutual growth and security. As the exercise unfolds, it not only strengthens military bonds but also paves the way for enhanced collaboration in the face of evolving security dynamics.
