UN Recognizes Indian Peacekeeper Radhika Sen with Gender Advocate Award

Radhika Sen, an inspiring Indian Army officer, is set to receive the prestigious 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award from the United Nations. This honor acknowledges her outstanding efforts in advocating for the rights of women and girls during her peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Shift from Biotechnology to the Battlefield

Radhika Sen’s journey is one of passion and dedication. Born in Himachal Pradesh, she initially pursued a master’s degree in biotechnology engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. However, driven by a strong desire to serve her country, she left her studies midway to join the Indian Army.

Making a Mark in Congo

In 2023, Major Sen was assigned to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). As the Engagement Platoon Commander with the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion, she served until April 2024. Her role was crucial in promoting gender equality and creating safe spaces for women to voice their concerns.

Recognized for Excellence

Major Sen is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive this UN award. The first was Major Suman Gawani, who was honored in 2019 for her work in South Sudan. Sen’s recognition highlights her significant contributions among the 6,063 Indian personnel in UN peacekeeping missions, including 1,954 individuals within MONUSCO, 32 of whom are women.

Advocating for Women and Children

During her tenure in the eastern DRC, Major Sen focused on gender equality and community support. She organized English classes for children, and health and vocational training for adults, significantly impacting the local communities. Moreover, she established Community Alert Networks, helping conflict-affected populations in North Kivu stay informed and safe.

Honored on a Global Stage

The award ceremony will take place on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, highlighting the global significance of Sen’s work. Her efforts align with the 2000 Security Council resolution to protect women and girls from conflict-related sexual violence.

Verdict

Major Radhika Sen’s story is a testament to the impact one person can have on global peace and gender equality. Her dedication and bravery not only bring honor to the Indian Army but also serve as an inspiration to all those who strive to make a difference in the world.
